IMPLICIT BIAS

It's the Attitude

Bias is the attitude or stereotypes that impact and affect our understanding, potential actions and decisions in an unconscious manner. Biases are both favorable or unfavorable and are activated outside our awareness or intentional control. We all have them. What we choose to do about them can have potential consequences. This training provides an overview of the various biases we hold and how these may show up in the workplace. Participants leave with a better understanding and insights into their own biases and how to begin to do things differently.

OUCH! That Stereotype Hurts!

Learn How To Interrupt When Statements Impact On Others

Demeaning comments, stereotypes and bias have no place in today’s organizations, yet few people have the courage or skills to speak out against these attitudes and behaviors. Ouch! That Stereotype Hurts provides concrete tools and techniques for speaking out against stereotypical and biased statements; helps one to understand why people sit silent when faced with these attitudes and behaviors; and provides skills to speak up without guilt or blame.

BEING AN ALLY WARRIOR

Expand your allyship!

We will first begin with a self-assessment to determine your pattern of responding to problematic statements. We will review the six ally response patterns and review your assessment. We will review and practice the RACE (reflect, ask, connect, expand) model to invite authentic discussion. We will then review best strategies to being an ally - when and how to do it, calling out vs calling in, and develop ways to expand your allyship.

STRUCTURAL RACISM

The History and Cycle

We review terminology and our history of race and racism. We examine the various expressions of racism and current day examples of each. We will review cycles of empowerment and discuss culturally responsive practices that engage our communities and those we serve to support community learning and change. We will examine the cultural and equity work needed to interrupt and dismantle structural racism.

WHITE FRAGILITY

Walking Through It

White Fragility, as defined by Robin Diangelo, is the state in which even a minimum amount of racial stress becomes intolerable, triggering a range of defensive moves including the outward display of emotions such as anger, fear, guilt, and behaviors such as argumentation, silence, and leaving the stress-inducing situation. This training breaks down Diangelo’s book of the same title, into smaller segments while also providing a more comprehensive overview of racism and concluding with participants walking away with their own individual plans for continued growth and reflection.

MICROAGRESSIONS - Utilizing Respectful Communications

Examine Your Interactions

This training will help identify how intentional or unintentional bias and communication impacts our day-to-day interactions, particularly for our work lives. You will understand how microaggressions (behavioral indignities) communicate hostile, derogatory or negative slights to those that you communicate with. You will learn effective strategies to minimize the use of microaggressions and ensure your communication is respectful and inclusive

PERSPECTIVES

Your Personal Style

Perspectives is a highly leveraged set of training and intervention tools, helping individuals and groups develop a greater awareness of their strengths and limitations. Interpersonal style is a form of diversity, usually under recognized. The workshop begins with a personal style assessment which will identify both “core” preferences, under normal conditions, and “coping” preferences for dealing with conflict and stress. Equipped with the results of the assessment, participants begin the process of learning about their strengths and limitations in working more effectively with others. Once participants have a clear picture of their own strong interpersonal preferences, the focus shifts to understanding the preferences of people important to their success-colleagues, managers, subordinates, friends and family.

Working More Effectively with the LGBTQ+ Community

Embracing All

Discrimination, prejudice, denial of civil and human rights, harassment and family rejection are still tragically common for LGBTQ+ individuals. LGBTQ+ people with mental health conditions may also find themselves fighting a double stigma. Many will experience prejudice based on their identity as well as the stigma as one with a mental health illness. This training provides professionals with the understanding of general terminology, current issues and stances on LGBTQ+ counseling, and general competencies/best practices for working with the LGBTQ+ community.
